Periyar Tiger Preserve

Friday, January 18 - Saturday, January 19

Late Friday afternoon we went to the Periyar Tiger Preserve, just about a mile from our hotel for a cruise around Peryiyar lake (man-made) to see wildlife. There were monkeys and wild boar in the parking lot, so it was off to a good start. Periyar is known more for its elephants than its tigers, so we were hoping to see a few, but alas, no elephants. We did see lots of birds, bison, and deer. Birds nesting on dead tree stumps in the middle of the reservoir were the most interesting site along with the beautiful blue kingfisher birds.

There were a few turtles too and a weird turtle shaped restaurant back by the parking lot, but none of it could compare to what we saw in Ranthambore a couple of weeks ago.

When I own a house, I want it to look like that. What a conversation starter.
